One thousand naira notes

Nigeria’s insecurity has suddenly moved one step forward. As we strive to stop the menace of the Islamic sect known as Boko Haram, or keep in check the corruption level of our leaders etc, new challenge has emerged: Turning offertory collection into paper.

Fear and confusion gripped parishioners of St. Mary Parish, Hwolshe in Jos, Plateau state when N300,000 offertory collection suddenly turned into bundle of papers as it was about to be deposited in the bank. The said amount was handed to Miss Ifeoma Eze, the church secretary to be deposited in the bank before the mystery occurred.

Eze said Wednesday that she had filled out the teller at the main branch of Jos Zenith Bank with the money wrapped in a polythene but saw papers when she was about to give the cash to the cashier. Her scream attracted other customers and staff of the bank who tried consoling her. She said her fear was how to relay the story to the Parish Priest who entrusted the money to her. One of the church members said it was not difficult to believe Eze’s story because she was the church secretary and had handled its funds without blemish in the past five years.

I guess the question in our mind right now is, did Miss Ifeoma Eze steal the money and replaced it with papers? Did the money turn into paper while she was at the bank or before it was handed over to her? If it was before it was handed over to her, didn’t she confirm the money before heading to the bank? If it turned at the bank, what proper way will she relay the story to the church for her to be believed?

Too many things are happening at the same time in this country. The vices keep growing astronomically and there seem to be no way out of it all. I await to see where we are heading to in this country.
