Little Things Also Matter At Sheraton Hotel -By Kolade Malik Ademola

I woke up to a mild Monday morning getting ready for a business symposium at Sheraton Hotel booked by my firm. Unlike every other morning, the anxiety of winning the contract grew exponentially. Often times, while wobbling between the Mirror and the wardrobe as I got dressed up, I lost place of my tie and socks intermittently, those frivolities that don’t add up on a usual working day.

On my left hand, the portfolio caused a lopsided gait as I slugged my way down the corridor of my room to the elevator. At every step, I forced a smile to every passers-by just to relieve myself of the unnecessary anxiety within me.

“Ademola, this isn’t your first business proposal meeting,” I soliloquised, “so why get unnecessarily nervous?”

The beep of the elevator revived me from my reverie, and along with two Chinese men , I disgorged myself out of the elevator and proceeded towards Moremi Hall.

“Shall we begin?” a tall chubby man asked, while the room was set into business mode with the illuminant getting dimmed and the projector coming on for display.

I dipped my hands in my pockets to retrieve the flash drive where the presentation was stored, but I felt a sudden emptiness in my pocket. The flash drive was there but something else was amiss. Out of reflex, sweat conjured on my face and I began to choke on the air in the room.

“Secure this contract and you have the chance to become the Associate Director. Don’t miss the opportunity this time around” the husky voice of my boss echoed in my head as I groped the table in search of something relatively insignificant to the business Tycoon and his Associates sitting in the room.

Everyone’s attention got diverted, “young man, what are you looking for?” one of them intended to ask, but before he could finish his question, the knock on the door cut him short.

“I guess you might be needing this” a damsel with a ponytail said as she came in.

“Who’s this?”

“I’m Diana, his Secretary” She responded before I could utter a response, handed over the file to me and made her way out of the room.

I was perplexed, I opened the file and smile conjured on my face, what I lost was a piece of paper where I scribbled some items of information a few minutes prior leaving my suite, but I got a file later on, and the piece of paper lying helplessly therein.

“How could she know this little thing, a piece of paper, mattered to me? She, as a worker at Sheraton Hotel, could have disposed it during her room cleaning, but why didn’t she do that? I asked myself those questions but they were left hanging in the air with no response.

Today, not only did I secure the contract and became an Associate Director with that piece of paper, but I also got a beautiful family with her.
