Thanks to our national new age, we are a year older today, huraaay! Nigeria is celebrating its 56yrs of independence today. The name Nigeria clock 102 years old with exactly 56 years of self-rule, Greatness! Hope y’all have read my poem “Poem to my Green Flag(Nigeria @ 56), if not go and read it.

Our Communicators

Mrs Luggard, when serving as a secretary to luggard as a single with name Flora Shaw suggested the name “Nigeria” in a letter to The Times of London, in January 8th 1897, She named the areas that fell within the Muurish Sokoto Emirate and Muurish Benin,” Niger area” she amalgamated the southern and Northern protectorate together in 1914. Nigeria is just a geographical name from a communicator who created the name Nigeria.

My Dear Good people, of this Great Nation! What is written is written on page 70 of the DUAL MANDATE, just some 12years after the amalgamation (1926), Shaws husband and Colonial master Lugard took your grannies, my grannies to the cleaners. The following is how he described them:
“In character and temperament, the typical African of this race-type is a happy, thriftless, excitable person, lacking in self control, discipline, and foresight. Naturally courageous, and naturally courteous and polite, full of personal vanity, with little sense of veracity, fond of music and loving weapons as an oriental loves jewelry.

His thoughts are concentrated on the events and feelings of the moment, and he suffers little from the apprehension for the future or grief for the past. His mind is far nearer to the animal world than that of the European or Asiatic, and exhibits something of the animals’ placidity and want of desire to rise beyond the state he has reached. Through the ages the African appears to have evolved no organised religious creed, and though some tribes appear to believe in a deity, the religious sense seldom rises above pantheistic animalism and seems more often to take the form of a vague dread of the supernatural. He lacks the power of organisation, and is conspicuously deficient in the management and control alike of men or business. He loves the display of power, but fails to realise its responsibility. He will work hard with a less incentive than most races. He has the courage of the fighting animal – an instinct rather than a moral virtue. In brief, the virtues and defects of this race-type are those of attractive children, whose confidence when it is won is given ungrudgingly as to an older and wiser superior and without envy…. Perhaps the two traits which have impressed me as those most characteristic of the African native are his lack of apprehension and his ability to visualize the future”.
This was what Lugard said of our fore-fathers, my fore-fathers and your forefathers and Below is what our forefathers said about us:

Nigerian unity is only a British invention” – Alhaji Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, 1948.
“Nigeria is not a nation. It is a mere geographical expression. There are no ‘Nigerians’ in the same sense as there are ‘English,’ ‘Welsh,’ or ‘French,’ The word ‘Nigeria’ is a mere distinctive appellation to distinguish those who live within the boundaries of Nigeria and those who do not” – Chief Obafemi Awolowo, 1947.

“It is better for us and many admirers abroad that we should disintegrate in peace and not in pieces. Should the politicians fail to heed the warning, then I will venture the prediction that the experience of the Democratic Republic of Congo will be a child’s play if it ever comes to our turn to play such a tragic role” – Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, 1964.

This are lines from our heroes past validating the lines of luggard! These are great communicators who have tried to point out that the only way for us to grow is by communication about our unity, moral right and religious coduct which was termed “No-go” Area in the 2014 National Conference” We need to revisit this “No go area’s” dialogue and bring back the National conference because this is how we can move our nation forward.
