2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Ekong Warns Rivals — ‘It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over’
Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has vowed Nigeria’s World Cup hopes remain alive after their 2-1 win over Lesotho, warning South Africa and Benin Republic that “it ain’t over till it’s over.”
Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has issued a rallying message to Group C rivals South Africa and Benin Republic after Nigeria’s hard-fought 2-1 victory over Lesotho in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The experienced defender, who scored one of Nigeria’s goals in Friday night’s win in Polokwane, took to X (formerly Twitter) shortly after the game to urge fans to stay optimistic and remind opponents that the Super Eagles are still in the race.
“It ain’t over till it’s over,” Ekong posted.
His short but defiant message reflects the team’s determination and belief as the qualification battle intensifies.
Nigeria currently sits third in Group C with 14 points, trailing Benin Republic and South Africa, but still within striking distance of qualification.
To secure a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Super Eagles must defeat Benin Republic by at least two goals in their final group match, while also hoping South Africa drop points against Rwanda in their concluding fixture.
Despite the slim margin for error, Ekong’s post underscores the squad’s fighting spirit and confidence that Nigeria can still make it to the global stage after missing out on Qatar 2022.
