As Africa’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers reach their nail-biting climax, attention turns to the final round of matches that will determine the continent’s remaining representatives heading to North America.

With Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, and Ghana already booking their places, several nations are still in contention — some chasing automatic qualification, others hoping for a playoff chance. Here are five African teams to watch as the drama unfolds:

  1. Nigeria
The Super Eagles’ qualification run has been far from smooth. With just three wins from nine games, Nigeria’s chances now depend on defeating Benin in Uyo — ideally by at least two goals — while hoping South Africa drop points against Rwanda.
Despite the pressure, Nigeria’s resilience and knack for last-minute turnarounds could yet deliver a surprise.
  2. Benin
Coached by former Nigeria manager Gernot Rohr, Benin are on the brink of history. Leading Group C with 17 points, they need a home win to secure their first-ever World Cup ticket.
However, a loss could see them overtaken by both South Africa and Nigeria, making this a true “win or bust” showdown.
  3. South Africa
A three-point deduction for fielding an ineligible player has complicated the path for Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana. Still, they can qualify if they beat Rwanda and Benin fail to win.
A two-goal victory might also see them through even with a Benin draw — setting up an intense night in Johannesburg.
  4. Cape Verde
The island nation is on the verge of a fairytale moment, needing only a home victory over Eswatini to qualify.
After a controversial offside call denied them an earlier celebration in a 3–3 draw with Libya, expect high emotion and nationwide anticipation in Praia.
  5. Ivory Coast
The reigning African champions are just one point ahead of Gabon in Group F and will look to finish the job at home against Kenya. With their current form and attacking prowess, the Elephants are strong favourites to secure their place in the finals.
  6. Senegal (Honourable Mention)
Unbeaten so far, Senegal need just one win or even a draw against Mauritania to confirm another World Cup appearance. Given their consistency, few doubt they’ll make it comfortably.
