2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Super Eagles Coach Chelle Says “We’re Still Alive” After Lesotho Win
Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle remains optimistic after Nigeria’s 2-1 win over Lesotho, praising his players’ resilience and declaring, “We’re still alive,” ahead of their decisive clash with Benin Republic.
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has expressed optimism about Nigeria’s qualification hopes after their hard-fought 2-1 victory over Lesotho in Friday night’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match in Polokwane.
Goals from captain William Troost-Ekong and Jerome Akor Adams secured the much-needed win for the three-time African champions, keeping them in third place in Group C with 14 points and within reach of qualification.
Speaking during his post-match press conference, Chelle praised his players for their resilience under pressure and insisted that the team’s campaign is far from over.
“Today, we are happy because we got the three points — we are still alive. Maybe the journalists can do the mathematics for us. I’m happy for my players and want to congratulate them,” he said.
The Malian tactician acknowledged the immense pressure surrounding the Super Eagles’ qualification quest, noting that the team has been under scrutiny for months.
“We’ve felt the pressure since March. Every time my players come to camp, they feel it because it’s important for Nigeria to be at the World Cup.
We have a lot of pressure — this is not an excuse for our position, it’s just the reality. Maybe this win will ease some of that pressure. It wasn’t easy,” Chelle admitted.
Despite the challenges, Chelle reaffirmed his squad’s determination to keep fighting until the end as they prepare for their crucial final Group C clash against Benin Republic.
