2027 Elections: Peter Obi, Governor Bala Mohammed Call for United Opposition Front

Speaking during the visit, Obi lamented the erosion of democratic norms under the current administration, stressing the importance of a collaborative opposition. “The opposition has to work together,” he said. “We found out that in different parties today, a party in government doesn’t want democracy to function the way it should function. I said it and I maintain categorically that if I have an opportunity to serve this country, every party will function properly as a political party.”

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed have called on Nigeria’s opposition parties to unite and present a common front ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Their appeal came on Friday during Obi’s courtesy visit to Governor Mohammed in Bauchi. Earlier that day, Obi had visited Malikiya College of Nursing, Midwifery, Health and Social Sciences in the state capital, where he donated N10 million.

He also emphasized the need to strengthen political institutions over individuals, saying, “I want the party to be bigger than the president and the government so that we can build orderliness because parties will outlive us.”

Obi further stated that uniting the opposition is essential for the country’s future. “What we are trying to do is to navigate where we come together and resolve to do the right thing for the future of our children,” he said.

Echoing these sentiments, Governor Mohammed expressed support for greater cooperation among opposition parties and revealed his desire for Obi to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“I have already said I want him to be in the PDP. There are plans. There are desires. Strategies. All the opposition parties must come together,” Mohammed said. “We want to make sure that there is a coming together in alliances by parties that are in the opposition so that we can present a common front. He is one of the outstanding leaders of the opposition parties. Definitely, having him here is a very big delight.”

Both leaders underscored the urgency of building a united political front to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy and ensure credible leadership in the years ahead.
