The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) has raised alarm that more than 33 million Nigerians could suffer severe hunger and malnutrition by 2026 if urgent action is not taken.

The warning was issued by the NRCS Secretary-General, Dr. Abubakar Kende, on Friday in Abuja during the unveiling of the organisation’s Nutrition Advocacy Plan.

The event also featured the recognition of Ambassador Layla Ali Othman, who was formally named the Nutrition Ambassador of the Red Cross.

Kende said the organisation was hopeful that hunger and malnutrition could be significantly reduced through support from philanthropists and partners like Othman. He added that the Red Cross envisions her as the face of its Anti-Hunger and Malnutrition campaign.

He noted that the new advocacy plan lays the foundation for coordinated and impactful interventions aimed at tackling the growing food crisis in the country.

“The society hopes to make a significant impact in the fight against hunger and malnutrition with the help of its nutrition ambassador and other stakeholders,” Kende said.
