A Culture Of Impunity -By Charles Ogbu

A National Army cannot act like a blood-thirsty killer squad and we just do social media condemnation and move on. We need to organise to drag this Army by the blokos. Slam them with lawsuits both in Nigerian court, ECOWAS court and even internationally. We just lack strong LOCAL LEADERSHIP at the home-front across every Igbo state and THIS IS THE ROOT OF OUR PROBLEM.

This is the only reason a National Army will shoot indiscriminately into a residential building and set another afire AND STILL HAVE THE AUDACITY TO RECORD IT THEMSELVES. Meanwhile, they did these while speaking Hausa language, (not English) in a multi-ethnic, multi-religious country that is currently engulfed in ethnic tension. I do not know the full context of the military action in those clips but not even an operation against Boko Haram deserve to be conducted in that manner.

But like I’ve said before, until we learn to fight through multiple fronts, this official banditry by the army will not stop.

If we had strong LOCAL LEADERSHIP, no external power, no matter how powerful, not even the President, can vanquish us. FIGHTING TO INSTALL STRONG LOCAL LEADERSHIP ACROSS EVERY IGBO STATE IS THE VERY FIRST STEP TOWARDS IGBO EMANCIPATION. This is the only fight worth fighting with the urgency of now.

When the army or any security operatives conducts operation in an irresponsible and murderous manner in Enugu, it should not be some unelected Charles Ogbu who should hold the army accountable. IT SHOULD BE THE GOVERNOR OF ENUGU STATE. If it happens in Imo or Abia for instance, it should be the GOVERNOR OF THAT PARTICULAR STATE. Ditto any other state because the elected government has all the wherewithal including the platform, structure and legitimacy to demand and extract accountability in such situations.

If we don’t positively conspire to install strong LOCAL LEADERSHIP at home, we will continue in this song of lamentation forever because the truth is, Nigeria has since gone south COMPLETELY and I honestly don’t see the Army changing for the better. Those of you who are encouraging Igbos not to vote in the upcoming Anambra gubernatorial election are actually part of the problem, not the solution. You may not know it now but your action will further push Ndigbo, not just ndi Anambra into bondage. And no, I’m not digressing. This is actually the most important aspect of why we are here.

Opinion Nigeria is a practical online community where both local and international authors through their opinion pieces, address today’s topical issues.
