“Huahuahua”, came a cynical laughter from the Commander’s tent.
“Cease payan banza, Cease payan ofi” [worthless ‘cease fire’]…

That was the Commander. Asabe could tell from his voice. He reminisced over their past victories and trecheries  She had just been sent out of the tent while he attended to some of his men.

Sitting outside now under a tree, she wondered how fast the days have gone by. It’s been about eight months since they were captured and there doesn’t seem to be sign of hope anywhere amidst her many promises to Kauna.

She suddenly felt queasy and immediately ran into the bush. Five minutes afterwards, she emerged tired, tears rolling down her cheeks. It seems she may be pregnant again. She shrugged. This was not the first time. In fact, she had lost count.

The Commander told her clearly that she’s meant for his pleasure and nothing more. So the baby is often ‘set free’ as soon as formed. Yes, ‘set free’ because she would rather not have her baby born into captivity. Her sorrows would have known no bounds. Asabe spat out to herself, “Sai ka ce ni broiler ce”, [as though I am a broiler]. Atimes she wished to have taken in  and allowed to have her freedom for some time- pregnant girls are no-go-areas in the camp until their babies’ fate is decided. But the little one wouldn’t deserve such a treatment- to be born into agony for the sake of a tiny period of ‘freedom’? No. Both options were no options.

“Asabe!” Hannatu called.

“Abdul Ibn Farouk said to give you this”. She went closer and handed a rusty bunch of keys to Asabe. That was the key to the kitchen store and a new batch of agony unfolded…

It’s a new year, and with the current situation in the country, elections seem more important than saving our girls.
