A Letter To Nigerian Parents -By Salim Yakubu Akko

It has been long that many things partaining our parents have been yanking away my dreams for a better Nigeria. And it was painstaking that I could not hold my pen back from writing this letter. Perhaps, it might be seen uncertain to you, but the naked truth and the fundamentals of  building a better Nigeria might be found with you.

Dear beloved parents, you were the past, the present of the howling Nigeria. You are the bedrocks  to producing a promising and a paramount future of this bleeding  country. But this can be done only if you are intents of bringing everlasting change.

The attainability of the promising future we have been dreaming of in this country are linked with the answers you have for the following questions: what causes hardship, kidnapping, terrorrism, poverty, insecurity, tribalism, corruption and other numerous indices bedeviling every sector?

The strong horses that gallop for the development of this nation are helplessly broken to the extent that it could be very difficult to rescue this country. This is cushily understandable considering the way you deal with your sons and daughters in your respective communities.

Many of you these days are show less concern or don’t care about their children’s behaviours, and this helps in influencing the children to get involved in some dubious acts, such as kidnapping or killing of innocent people. And it does not stop at killing people in the outta, they may one day unintentionaly  kill you when they became addicted to drugs.

A child is a society. If he is built positively, so does the society and vice versa. A saying goes: ‘When you teach a child good or wrong from his younger days, he would definately consider what you taught him as good even if it was bad’.

Dear parents, it is undoubtful that you are the elements of enhancing poverty, corruption, violence and so many indices of causing backwardness to this country. If you have taught your children to love everybody in a society irrespective of one’s tribe or religion; the rate of some barbaric acts bedeviling this country in every sector could have been less.

Dear parents, you should be very serious with your children; teach them what is good and what is bad, send them to school, seat with them and show them love, advise them, correct them when they made mistake, and help them when they are found wanting, know their peers and punish them when due.

Dear parents, since we learned that children are the future of Nigeria; it is high time you knew that the future of Nigeria is indirectly at your hands. Through you we can curb corruption, eradicate poverty, tramp out tribalism, shun insecurity and build this country.
