Abia ADC Demands Immediate Release of Detained Party Chairman Don Norman Obinna
The Abia State ADC calls for the immediate release of its detained chairman, Don Norman Obinna, after a petition by a suspended member. The party alleges political pressure, urges due process, and asks the IGP to review the case.
The Abia State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged the police in Umuahia to release its state chairman, Mr. Don Norman Obinna, who is currently in detention.
According to Opinion Nigeria, Obinna was detained after voluntarily responding to a police invitation linked to a petition submitted by a suspended party member, Uche Ndom.
In a statement issued by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Chiamaka Ohaka, the ADC expressed deep concern over the chairman’s continued detention. Ohaka alleged that despite the police concluding their investigation and preparing to grant Obinna bail, the process was unexpectedly halted. She appealed to the police to ensure that due process is upheld.
Ohaka further suggested that unnamed political actors might be influencing the situation, though she did not present evidence to support the claim.
When contacted regarding the allegations, the Media Aide to Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Uche Awom, said the senator would not respond to the matter.
The ADC spokesperson also called on the Inspector General of Police to review the circumstances surrounding Obinna’s detention to guarantee fairness for all parties involved.
She explained that the petition against Obinna stemmed from accusations by Ndom, who claimed that the chairman and another party official disrupted a meeting at a hotel in Umuahia. Ohaka added that police investigators reviewed the matter and found no grounds for an armed robbery charge, which was subsequently dismissed.
The party reiterated its worry over what it perceives as undue pressure in the case and emphasised the need for transparency, justice, and respect for the rights of party members.
