Nigeria began their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Tanzania at Stade de Fez, courtesy of goals from Semi Ajayi and Ademola Lookman.

The Super Eagles started the game strongly, with Victor Osimhen and Lookman troubling the Tanzanian defence early on. Nigeria’s first clear chance came in the 11th minute when Chukwueze’s corner found Akor Adams, but his shot was well saved by the Tanzanian goalkeeper.

Tanzania responded with long-range attempts, though Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali kept his side in the game. Nigeria eventually took the lead in the 36th minute when Alex Iwobi’s lofted cross met Ajayi, who powered a header into the net for a 1-0 advantage.

Despite Tanzania showing some attacking intent in wet conditions, Nigeria went into halftime leading.

The second half saw Tanzania’s M’Mombwa equalise in the 50th minute, slotting a lofted ball into the bottom-left corner. Nigeria responded almost immediately, with Lookman scoring in the 52nd minute after a precise left-footed strike outside the box to restore the lead.

Both sides made substitutions—Nigeria bringing on Simon Moses, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, and Paul Onuachu, while Tanzania introduced John, Job, and Mnonga to strengthen their attack. Tanzania came close late, but John’s low shot in the 83rd minute went wide, allowing Nigeria to hold on for the win.

The victory gives Nigeria a perfect start in Group C, while Tanzania will aim to recover in their next match.
