AFCON 2025: Onana Dropped as New Cameroon Coach Pagou Unveils Overhauled Squad

Cameroon’s new coach David Pagou has excluded goalkeeper André Onana and captain Vincent Aboubakar from the AFCON 2025 squad, while Bryan Mbeumo makes the list. The reshuffle follows Marc Brys’ dismissal as Cameroon prepares for the tournament in Morocco.

Cameroon’s first-choice goalkeeper André Onana has been omitted from the national team squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), one of the most notable exclusions in the list released ahead of the tournament.

Newly appointed head coach David Pagou left out the Trabzonspor goalkeeper, who has been a consistent presence for the Indomitable Lions in recent years.

Onana’s absence is not the only major shakeup, as longtime captain Vincent Aboubakar has also been excluded from the squad heading to Morocco.

Meanwhile, Manchester United forward Bryan Mbeumo made the final list, strengthening Cameroon’s offensive options as preparations continue for the tournament scheduled to begin on December 21.

Pagou, a veteran Cameroonian coach and physical-education instructor, took charge following the dismissal of Marc Brys. His early decisions have already stirred debate among supporters and pundits, many of whom see the changes as part of a wider rebuilding process aimed at revitalising the five-time AFCON champions.

Under Brys, Cameroon failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada — a disappointment that added pressure for reforms within the squad.
