Saudi club Al Ittihad have parted ways with head coach Laurent Blanc following Sunday’s 2–0 loss to Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr.

In a statement posted on social media, the club confirmed that Blanc’s assistant, Hassan Khalifa, will step in as caretaker coach. Al Ittihad currently sit third in the Saudi Pro League, three points behind Al Nassr after four matches.

Blanc, 59, took charge of Al Ittihad in 2024 after an underwhelming spell with French side Lyon.

A decorated centre back during his playing career, Blanc represented clubs such as Marseille, Inter Milan, and Manchester United, and was part of France’s squad that won the 1998 World Cup on home soil. He missed the final after being sent off in the semi-final against Croatia.

Blanc later managed the French national team from 2010 to 2012, leading them to the Euro 2012 quarter-finals before being replaced by Didier Deschamps. He went on to enjoy domestic success with Paris Saint-Germain, winning three consecutive Ligue 1 titles between 2014 and 2016, though his inability to deliver in the Champions League ultimately cost him the role.
