Ali Modu Sheriff Denies Rift With Shettima, Labels Boko Haram Report as “Fake News”
Former Borno governor Ali Modu Sheriff denies reports alleging he accused Vice President Kashim Shettima of creating Boko Haram, calling it fake news and threatening legal action.
Former Borno State Governor and ex-APC National Chairman, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, has dismissed as false viral reports claiming he accused Vice President Kashim Shettima of creating the Boko Haram insurgency.
In a statement issued by his media office on Friday, Sheriff described the online publication — titled “It’s Not Me, It’s Shettima Who Created Boko Haram – Sheriff Reveals” — as entirely fabricated, warning that it was designed to mislead the public and tarnish his image.
“The story is a total falsehood, devoid of truth, and a deliberate attempt to sow discord within the nation’s political landscape,” the statement read. “At no time did Senator Sheriff engage with any journalist on this matter.”
Sheriff, who governed Borno State from 2003 to 2011, called the publication a “dangerous piece of fake news” and said it sought to undermine his long-standing efforts toward peace, unity, and development in both Borno and Nigeria at large.
He reaffirmed his support for national stability and condemned those spreading misinformation for political mischief. The former governor also revealed that his legal team has been directed to pursue action against those responsible for the false report.
“Should the publication not be retracted, the Senator will seek full legal redress,” the statement warned.
Sheriff urged the public and media organizations to ignore the baseless story, emphasizing his continued commitment to truth, justice, and accountability.
