Anambra Communities Donate Millions to Fund Soludo’s Re-election Campaign
In a major shift from traditional politics, Anambra communities and groups are voluntarily donating millions to support Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s re-election, citing his development record and leadership.
A new political trend is unfolding in Anambra State as various communities and groups are voluntarily contributing millions of naira to support Governor Chukwuma Soludo and his deputy, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, ahead of the November 8 governorship election.
Unlike in previous elections where candidates typically funded groups to secure votes, Soludo’s re-election campaign has seen citizens taking the lead with spontaneous financial support.
Since the campaign began, donations have poured in from across the state, with contributors citing the governor’s performance and development projects as their motivation.
The people of Oba in Idemili South Local Government Area endorsed Soludo for a second term with a ₦50 million donation, while Ekwulobia residents contributed ₦80 million in appreciation of the town’s transformation into an urban center.
The wave of support started with students under the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), who raised ₦3 million to help Soludo purchase his nomination form. This was followed by the Soludo Support Groups’ ₦50 million donation.
Further contributions came from the three senatorial zones — North (₦50 million), Central (₦70 million), and South (₦100 million) — as well as the Anambra State Markets Amalgamated Traders Association (ASMATA), which donated ₦10 million for what they described as the governor’s efforts in restoring order to markets.
Stakeholders from Idemili North and South raised ₦70 million, while Obosi and Amichi communities each contributed ₦50 million to the campaign.
Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, said the widespread financial support reflected citizens’ confidence in the governor’s leadership.
“The people are, on their own, backing Soludo’s development strides and vision for a prosperous Anambra State,” Mefor stated. “The governor may end up not contributing a farthing to his own campaign, setting a new record in electioneering funding in Nigeria. It’s commendable that no state resources are being used.”
He added that the surge of support shows communities’ desire to “continue the good work Soludo has started” and their unwillingness to be “left behind in the state’s progress.”
