ABUJA, 10 May 2018 — Abundant Nigeria Renewal Party (ANRP) has expressed deep concern on the ugly situation in the country whereby individuals personalise institutions, constitute themselves in such a manner as to suggest that they are above the law, and refuse to be under any authority is condemnable.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Ibrahim Kpotun Idris has on three different occasions failed to heed the invitation extended to him by the Nigerian Senate under various pretentes, but rather sending representatives. Following his absence at the third invitation by the Senate, he was declared by the Senate as unfit for public office. ANRP shares and supports this declaration.

The legislative arm of government is the only institution that symbolises democracy. Inasmuch as the Nigerian National Assembly has lived below expectation and has indeed been an encumbrance to our democratic experience, it must be respected as an institution and given its rightful pride of place. Deriding the legislature amounts to undermining own democracy itself.

President Muhammadu Buhari had publicly stated that the IGP disobeyed his clear orders, yet there were no consequences. Perhaps this and other instances are what give the IGP the impression that he is invincible and as the leading law enforcement officer is himself above the law. This is a dangerous precedent.

The National Assembly on the other hand has been abusing its authority and privilege, summoning officials of the executive arm for frivolous reasons including using their privilege for personal vendetta, more so at a time when there are burning issues requiring urgent attention. The authority of the National Assembly has must be held in sacred trust and used for the public good of all citizens, not to advance personal interests.

ANRP restates that must be called to order, and/or replaced .The Senate equally must conduct itself in a manner worthy of the trust it holds on behalf of the Nigerian people.
