APC Chieftain Mumuni Urges Federal Government to Fast-Track Border Fencing for Stronger National Security
APC chieftain Abayomi Nurain Mumuni urges the Tinubu government to fast-track border fencing and install monitoring systems to curb terrorism and strengthen national security.
A security expert and All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart, Abayomi Nurain Mumuni, has renewed calls for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to swiftly implement robust border security measures — including the fencing of Nigeria’s porous frontiers.
In a statement released Friday by his media aide, Rasheed Abubakar, Mumuni cautioned that Nigeria’s largely unmonitored borders are enabling the movement of terrorists and intensifying the country’s security problems.
He noted that earlier this year, Defence Minister Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd.) had issued a similar warning, highlighting how unsecured borders contribute to the trafficking of arms, the inflow of terrorists and other major security threats.
Mumuni proposed the construction of fortified border fences equipped with transponder systems capable of early detection and surveillance. He referenced successful international models, including the U.S.–Mexico border structures, Israel’s security barriers, and India’s border fortifications with Pakistan.
According to him, Nigeria’s geographic placement and extensive shared boundaries leave it highly exposed to infiltration by terrorist elements — a vulnerability that recent incidents have made even more evident.
The APC chieftain, who is a certified Counter Terrorism and Anti-Terrorism specialist, emphasised the urgency of adopting advanced border infrastructure. He said secure fencing integrated with transponder technology would greatly strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to detect and respond quickly to unauthorised movements.
He added that such measures would help protect citizens, reinforce national stability and enhance the country’s overall security framework.
“Investing in border security infrastructure will not only prevent cross-border terrorism but also improve the general security architecture of the nation,” Mumuni said.
“This initiative deserves urgent attention and adequate funding as a matter of national priority,” he added.
Mumuni urged the Federal Government to make the fencing of Nigeria’s border regions a priority, drawing lessons from effective global systems.
