With the 2027 general elections approaching, the APC Elders Caucus in Kwara State has unanimously backed the zoning of the party’s next governorship ticket to the Kwara North Senatorial District.

Chairman of the caucus, Barrister Kunle Sulyman, flanked by other members, announced the decision during a crowded press conference in Ilorin on Friday.

He recalled a similar briefing on November 21, 2022, where the caucus endorsed Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara Central for a second term, noting that Kwara Central has now produced governors for 20 years in total, while Kwara South has held the office for eight years.

“We want to use this avenue to appreciate His Excellency, the Governor of Kwara State, Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq CON, for making us proud thus far with his great performances across the state,” Sulyman said.

“In the same vein, we posit that it is in the interest of fair play, equity, and justice that we, members of the Kwara APC Elders Caucus, unanimously agreed that the next gubernatorial candidate for our great party should emerge from Kwara North Senatorial District.”

Sulyman explained that while any party member can constitutionally aspire to the governorship, “experience from the past has shown that such people never succeeded.”

The caucus also addressed grievances arising from the state’s Urban Renewal Programme, advising affected residents to seek redress through the courts or relevant agencies rather than being used by opposition parties to cause unrest.

Listing the governor’s developmental strides under the New Ilorin City Master Plan, the elders acknowledged temporary inconveniences but urged opposition parties to act “with patriotism by supporting and joining hands with the laudable programmes of this administration for the progress of Kwara State.”

They further commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for ongoing federal projects in the state and pledged their “unalloyed support” for his administration.

Finally, the caucus encouraged eligible residents to take advantage of the ongoing voter registration exercise, stressing: “Your vote is your weapon and your voter’s card is your instrument towards electing good leaders.”
