Applying Incident Management in Northeastern Nigeria’s Humanitarian INGOs -By Fatima Muritala
A “Peace Advocate” working to prevent crises must be equipped with thorough preparation and foresight, well before any incident arises. A strong incident management strategy not only safeguards the community but also enhances the well-being of the entire team involved.

A recent LinkedIn repost led me to deeply reflect on my work with the United Nations Development Program. As a humanitarian worker, I was trained to be constantly vigilant—analyzing, assessing, and managing risks in every moment.
Through my experience, I quickly recognized the power of information-sharing. It not only advances resources but also enhances quality of life. In my repost, I highlighted the importance of early warning and response systems in minimizing security threats and emphasized that protecting the state and its citizens requires everyone’s contribution. Those without access to information must be empowered to foster the smooth flow of information.
Incident management in conflict zones like Northeastern Nigeria underscores the role of informed, well-prepared individuals. Establishing strong relationships with community members is essential for building an information network on the ground, with rigorous gatekeeping to verify its authenticity. Crisis management teams must stay one step ahead in analysis, reasoning, and prediction.

Effective incident management revolves around five pillars: Preparation, Prediction, Prevention, Performance, and Post-Action Assessment. Proper incident analysis helps to accurately identify and address crises before they escalate.
I want to recognize and celebrate the incredible individuals who continue to dedicate themselves to crisis measurement, mitigation, and resolution. Your hard work is invaluable, and you are deeply appreciated.
