Armed Men Attack Nasarawa Community, Forcing Abrupt End to Church Crusade
A church crusade in Agboda, Nasarawa LGA, was abruptly stopped after armed men attacked the area, injuring a youth and causing panic among participants. Organiser Dr. Daniel Ukpo urges government to boost security as residents live in fear.
A church crusade in the Agboda community of Mararaba Udege, Nasarawa Local Government Area, was thrown into chaos on Monday evening after unidentified armed men attacked the area, injuring one participant with a machete.
The crusade’s organiser, Dr. Daniel Ukpo, told journalists by phone that the disruption occurred between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m., just as worshippers had gathered for the programme. Panic erupted when reports filtered in that a nearby community had come under attack.
“One of the youths in the community was attacked while riding his motorcycle and suffered a machete cut. His motorcycle was also taken. When news of the attack reached us, confusion broke out and people began to flee,” Ukpo said.
He confirmed that the crusade was halted immediately due to rising tension.
Ukpo expressed deep concern over what he described as persistent insecurity in the Mararaba Udege area. He said that during a recent visit to the Ochimi community, residents complained about threats to their safety and the destruction of farmland.
According to him, the security presence in the area remains insufficient. “People are being attacked on the roads and on their farms, and many cases are not reported,” he added, urging the government to bolster security in the affected communities.
Ukpo also alleged that previous religious gatherings in the area had been interrupted by suspected armed herders.
“The worrying part is that residents here feel defenceless. Many have nowhere else to relocate and are living in fear,” he stated.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had not released an official response to the incident.
