Arsenal’s Odegaard out for weeks with knee injury, says Arteta
Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard faces weeks out with a knee injury, Mikel Arteta confirms, calling the midfielder “very unlucky” amid the Gunners’ strong Premier League form.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed that captain Martin Odegaard will be sidelined for several weeks following a knee injury, with the Norwegian playmaker likely to return only after the November international break.
Odegaard’s latest setback came during the 2–1 win over West Ham on October 3, when he was forced off before half-time — marking the third straight match in which he has been substituted before the break, a first in Premier League history.
The 26-year-old has also battled a recurring shoulder problem this season, adding to Arsenal’s growing injury list.
“It will be weeks. No definite date for his return, but he’s evolving well. Very unlucky, what’s happening with him and his injuries this season,” Arteta told reporters ahead of Arsenal’s clash with Fulham on Saturday.
The Spanish manager said the club would monitor Odegaard’s recovery closely.
“It could be after the next international break, but we’ll have to see how he progresses — how the knee’s healing and how he manages the next steps in his rehab. It’s too early to give an answer,” he added.
Despite injuries to Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, William Saliba, and Noni Madueke, Arsenal have maintained strong form, sitting one point clear of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table after seven games.
New signing Viktor Gyokeres, brought in to strengthen Arsenal’s attack, has scored three goals in ten appearances but has gone eight matches without scoring for club and country.
Arteta, however, backed the 27-year-old Swedish striker to find his rhythm soon.
“He brings so much to the team, and watching the games back, I’m very pleased with what he’s given us,” Arteta said.
“I told him before his first meeting: the No. 9 I want is one who can handle not scoring for six or eight games. If not, you have to go somewhere else because the pressure and expectation will always be there.”
The Arsenal boss added that Gyokeres’ contribution went beyond goals.
“If you wear the No. 9 shirt for Arsenal, you have to keep your head up and keep performing, even when you’re not scoring. Once those chances start going in, I’m sure he’ll deliver,” Arteta said.
