As Citizens We Must Get It Right -By Muhammad Umar Shehu

Using religion and ethnicity in politics to discriminate in a country like Nigeria is illogical and nonsensical . One thing am cocksure of politicians is that, if they know voting will brings about change in a free society we lived in, they will make sure they’d make it illicit and illegal for the poor masses. Since politics have no relation to religion, ethnicity or moral.

Nigerian politicians uses religion and ethnicity to divide we the populace of this country in a sense that the politicians and the elites belong to a same class while we the fellow masses I.e the working class are here fighting and attacking each other in the name of religion and ethnicity. By the way we’re fighting for them to achieve a certain objective or goal they have in mind.

Have you ever witness a gathering of a Nigerian politician? If yes at least you have to ask yourself this question. Do they assume they’re from different religions and ethnicity? Nay, because the barrier they created at that moment is they are from the same class “political class” but we the fellow masses are here attacking each other by using the term religion and ethnicity.

The theme election has ever meant diversity, not violence. No matter how bad elements manipulate it in achieving it’s selfish goals it will never be the reason to act violently or cause unrest among your neighbors rather go out and vote for your candidate and make sure your vote count.

H. L. Mencken once told us, “The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.”

The elites, politicians ruling class of Nigeria has used tribalism, religious bigotry a primitive neanderthal instinct, to their advantage and the goal the have in mind to achieve since the beginning of time. They use it to divide and conquer us. They drive wedges between us peasants and make us fight each other, so we won’t rise up against our rulers and fight them back.

If you can take a look at this issue vary well, you can observe this old trick still revolting everywhere in Nigeria today. Muslim and Christian are fighting each other, Igbo’s, Hausa’s, Yoruba’s and the Fulani’s are also fighting each other all in the name of politics. No that doesn’t happen by itself. At least we have to think that there are always political voices instigating this fighting to achieve their goals.

To my country men and women, let’s join hand together as one to fight those politicians with vested interest; using religion and ethnicity to divide our sense of belonging.
