ASUU Reinstates Repressive Scholarship Scheme For Befitting Students -By Wonderful Adegoke

In a bid to maintain its strive for academic excellence, the National Executive Council of the Academic Staff Union of Universities reinstates its repressive scholarship scheme for students in Nigerian Universities affiliated with any ASUU branch.
This information obtained earlier this week is contained in a circular released to the public from the National Secretariat on 03rd of October, 2023.
The circular directed to Branch Coordinators read in part: “The National Executive Council of the Academic Staff Union of Universities at the meeting in Gombe State University held between 03rd and 04th of February, 2018, instituted a scholarship scheme for students in Nigerian Public universities with ASUU branches.”
“The scholarship scheme which was at the rate of One Hundred Thousand Naira per beneficiary on one-off basis has been reviewed to Hundred Thousand Naira. It shall be for two beneficiaries per branch (University) and will be awarded to indigent students,” the circular noted.
The eight guidelines for the award are as follows:
1. The award will be for established indigent students from each branch.
2. Each branch shall establish a
committee to select the awardees.
3. A well-advertised call for application shall be made by the branch.
4. The selection committee monitored by the zonal cordinator shall interact with the applicants and select a candidate per branch.
5. The selected candidate shall be presented to the congress for confirmation.
6. The branch shall communicate the names of the selected candidate to the National for confirmation and presentation of the award.
7. The interview process of the Gani Fawehinmi scholarship shall be adopted by the branch committee.
8. The award shall be presented to the successful candidates at the zonal level. However, the scholarship shall be launched at national level.

“Branches are expected to complete the selection process and forward the names of the awardees on or before the 31st of October, 2023. Any branch that fails to work within the timeline shall be left out of the award for year 2023,” the circular concluded.
