ASUU Reports “Encouraging Progress” in Ongoing Talks with Federal Government
ASUU says talks with the Federal Government over the 2009 Agreement and other demands are yielding results, with progress made on promotion arrears, allowances, and staff welfare as the warning strike continues.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced that “encouraging progress” has been made in its ongoing negotiations with the Federal Government over the full implementation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement and other unresolved demands that triggered the union’s current warning strike.
This was disclosed in Strike Bulletin No. 2, issued by the National Strike Coordinating Committee (NSCC) and signed by Dr. Christopher Piwuna, which reviewed the state of discussions between the two parties.
According to the bulletin, dated October 19, 2025, the NSCC met at the union’s National Secretariat on Saturday, October 18, to assess developments since the strike commenced.
ASUU confirmed that the government’s negotiation team, led by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, had presented documented responses and new offers aimed at addressing some of the union’s key grievances.
The union noted progress on several fronts, including:
- Release of third-party deductions
- Payment of promotion arrears
- Mainstreaming of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA)
- Resolution of disputes over the confiscation of University of Abuja land
- Addressing alleged victimisation of ASUU members at Kogi State University (KSU), Lagos State University (LASU), and the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO)
ASUU added that negotiations are still ongoing on various sections of the draft renegotiated 2009 Agreement, under the principles of collective bargaining, with the involvement of relevant Senate Committees and other key stakeholders.
While commending the “unity and resilience” of its members nationwide, the union urged them to remain steadfast and disciplined as discussions continue.
“Our members have shown exemplary commitment to the struggle. We must remain united and resolute in the few days ahead,” the bulletin stated.
ASUU further advised members to rely only on verified updates from their Branch Chairpersons and to attend regular branch congress meetings for accurate information.
Reaffirming its commitment to the revitalisation of Nigeria’s public universities through dialogue and collective action, the bulletin ended with the union’s familiar slogan:
“United we bargain, divided we beg! Solidarity forever!”
