Atiku, Obi, Others Celebrate Super Eagles’ 4–1 Victory in World Cup Playoffs
Nigeria’s 4–1 win over Gabon in the 2026 World Cup playoffs has drawn praise from Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Minister Yusuf Tuggar, and fans nationwide. The Super Eagles advance to face DRC in the final qualifying stage.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Anambra State Governor Peter Obi are among the prominent Nigerians who have hailed the Super Eagles following their emphatic 4–1 win over Gabon in the 2026 CAF World Cup playoffs.
Nigeria’s victory at the Moulay Hassan Stadium on Thursday secured their spot in the final phase of the World Cup qualifying series, with goals coming from Akor Adams, Chidera Ejuke, and a double from Victor Osimhen.
Following the match, fans flooded social media to applaud the team and encouraged them to stay focused ahead of Sunday’s crucial showdown with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Atiku, posting on his official X account, expressed pride in the national team.
“Proud of the @NGSuperEagles for giving Nigeria a fighting chance in the 2026 World Cup Africa playoff final. -AA,” he wrote.
Obi, reflecting on his busy travel schedule before catching the match, said the win reinforces the importance of investing in Nigerian talent.
He stated:
“I sincerely congratulate our dear Super Eagles on their outstanding and well-deserved victory today.
“Their performance is a reminder that when we invest in talents and support our institutions, Nigeria can compete and win on any global stage.
“Today, the Super Eagles have made us proud… Well done, Eagles. Keep soaring. -PO.”
Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar also praised the team’s discipline, saying:
“Congratulations to our national team @NGSuperEagles on their stunning 4–1 comeback victory over Gabon… Well done to the team for staying disciplined and finishing strong.”
Fans echoed the sentiment, including X user Joshua Sogunle, who described the performance as one of the team’s best in years.
“It’s been a long time since I saw the Super Eagles of Nigeria play this well… I am watching the Super Eagles today, and I’m not missing European football,” he wrote, urging the team to maintain focus.
Nigeria will now face the DRC, with the winner advancing to a six-nation FIFA intercontinental tournament in March.
