Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri Quits PDP Amid Party Defections
Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri resigns from the PDP, joining Speaker Ngobere and 18 lawmakers in a major shake-up that further weakens the opposition party.
Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The governor made the announcement on Wednesday during a meeting held at the Executive Council Chamber of the Bayelsa State Government House.
According to a Vanguard correspondent in Bayelsa, the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ngobere, also resigned from the PDP alongside 18 other lawmakers.
Governor Diri’s resignation comes barely 24 hours after Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah defected from the PDP to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
As of press time, Diri has not disclosed his next political move or whether he intends to join another party.
With Diri’s exit, the PDP — which has already lost three governors to the APC this year — now controls only eight states across the federation.
The development was confirmed by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, in a post shared on his verified social media handle.
