Benin Palace Denies Involvement in Attack on Don Pedro Obaseki
The Benin Palace says the Oba of Benin did not authorise the attack on media personality Don Pedro Obaseki, urging youths to respect the law and warning against misinformation.
The palace of the Oba of Benin has denied any link to the attack on media personality, Dr. Don Pedro Obaseki, which occurred on Sunday over alleged remarks he made in the United Kingdom during a meet-and-greet organised by former Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Secretary of the Benin Traditional Council (BTC), Frank Irabor, the palace distanced the monarch from the incident, stressing that the Oba of Benin, His Majesty Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, is a peaceful leader and father to all.
The council cautioned youths against taking the law into their hands and urged social media users to verify information before making public statements.
“The Benin Traditional Council wishes to use this medium to inform the general public that the unfortunate incident in which Pedro Obaseki was manhandled was not authorised by the Oba of Benin,” the statement said.
“It cannot be authorised because it is not in the character of our revered monarch to do so. The Oba of Benin is a peace-loving father to all.”
The council further advised youths to respect the rule of law, regardless of provocation, and allow security agencies to handle grievances.
“They should always respect the laws of the land in all actions and utterances and allow appropriate security agencies to handle all matters,” the statement added.
It also appealed to social media users to cross-check information before sharing it publicly.
The statement concluded with a New Year message from the monarch: “His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, CFR, Oba of Benin, wishes you all a happy new year.”
