Bode George Condemns Court Order Halting PDP National Convention
PDP chieftain Bode George has criticized the court ruling halting the party’s national convention, calling it judicial interference that threatens Nigeria’s democracy.
Former Deputy National Chairman (South) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, has condemned the Federal High Court ruling that stopped the party’s planned national convention.
Justice James Omotosho, on Friday, restrained the PDP from holding its national convention earlier scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan.
The order followed a suit alleging violations of the 1999 Constitution, INEC guidelines, and the PDP’s internal constitution, with the court ruling that the party failed to conduct valid state congresses before organizing elections for new national officers.
Justice Omotosho held that such procedural lapses undermined internal democracy, effectively putting the party’s leadership renewal on hold and raising questions about its organizational readiness.
Reacting to the development, Chief Bode George described the ruling as “shocking and dangerous for Nigeria’s democratic stability”, warning that it could set a disturbing precedent.
“This judgment will consume this country. It is time the judge removed his wig and gown and joined politics,” George said in a statement.
He insisted that the judiciary must not interfere in party administration except in clear constitutional violations, urging the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) and the National Judicial Council (NJC) to intervene.
“Judges are not politicians. Their duty is to interpret the law, not to meddle in party administration,” he added.
The PDP leader questioned the basis of the decision, noting that INEC monitored all PDP congresses across the country and did not raise any objection.
“INEC is not complaining. The judge did not invite INEC officials. So why is he complaining? Does he have political interest?” he queried.
George stressed that the PDP, founded in 1998, has consistently upheld due process in its internal affairs and that the court’s decision threatens party autonomy and could politicize the judiciary.
He urged members of the opposition party to remain calm and pursue legal remedies to overturn the order while continuing to uphold internal party mechanisms for resolving disputes.
The PDP is expected to explore further legal options in the coming days as it seeks to protect its internal processes and rebuild cohesion ahead of future elections.
