Recalling the recent tragic flood in Borno State, that was caused by a breach of near by Alau Dam. On September 10, 2024, Maiduguri was struck by a devastating flood. According to OCHA, The flood had killed at least 37 people, injured 58 and displaced of at least 41400 people.

After the devastating flood, they are stories untold. ‘A life after the flood”, how people struggle to start life and a widespread of damages and destruction caused by the flood. Looking at a particular area, mashamari, custom area. Where homes are swept away and several vital infrastructure damaged.

In mashamari, custom area, the flood damaged homes and roads rendering families homeless overnight and a significant effect on local businesses and daily life. People of the community have faced immeasurable setbacks, significant financial losses and high cost of living due to the road damages. The ripple effect of the flood on the local economy could be detrimental, as the recovery process looks to be long.

For many, the flood represents not just lost of property, but disruption of family life and security. Falmata Abakar, a mother of ten, shared her heart-felt story:

“When the flood happened I was at the hospital with my daughter who had just given birth via C-section,” she recalls, “Two of my sons were taken by the flood, and thankfully, people from our area managed to save them.”

Falmata continues, “Many of our shelters and belongings were washed away by the flood. We’ve lost everything and have to start life from scratch. It feels like a nightmare.
