A professional boxer, identified only as Bintin, has been accused of fatally punching a carpenter known as Yellow during a dispute over a burst football in the Adamo area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday after the carpenter allegedly burst a football belonging to the boxer’s son. According to eyewitnesses, the boxer’s wife called her husband—who was not home at the time—to report the matter. Upon his return, Bintin confronted Yellow and assaulted him until the community leader, the Baale, intervened and instructed the carpenter to replace the damaged ball.
Witnesses said Yellow went to buy a new football as directed but was trailed by the boxer, who, still fuming, struck him on the forehead with a powerful punch. The carpenter reportedly collapsed on the spot and was rushed to the Agbowa General Hospital, where doctors confirmed him dead.
A resident described the suspect as “arrogant” and known for previous violent outbursts in the area. Following the incident, the boxer turned himself in at the Imota Police Station, where he remains in custody.
Confirming the development, Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said:
“Divisional Police Officers do not have the authority to release a murder suspect. The case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for proper investigation.”
The Baale of the community confirmed that the deceased would be buried according to Islamic rites, noting that calm has since returned to the neighbourhood.
