Malawi’s former president, Peter Mutharika, has secured a comeback victory with 56.8 percent of the vote in last week’s elections, the country’s electoral commission announced on Wednesday.

The declaration came just hours after the incumbent, Lazarus Chakwera, publicly conceded defeat.

According to the commission, Chakwera polled 33 percent of ballots cast on September 16, in an election largely shaped by voter concerns over the surging cost of living in the southern African nation.
