Breaking: Manchester United Part Ways with Ruben Amorim After 14 Months
Manchester United have parted ways with manager Ruben Amorim after 14 months amid internal tensions. Darren Fletcher steps in as interim manager as the club aims for a top Premier League finish.
Manchester United have parted ways with manager Ruben Amorim, just 14 months after his arrival at Old Trafford, the club confirmed on Monday.
The decision came early Monday, reportedly due to an irreparable breakdown in internal relations.
In an official statement, the club said:
“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.”
According to sports journalist David Oistein, the decision was led by chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox, who agreed to terminate Amorim’s tenure following mounting tensions behind the scenes.
Former United midfielder Darren Fletcher, currently the club’s Under-18s coach, is expected to take over as interim manager. His first assignment will be Wednesday night’s away fixture against Burnley, while a permanent appointment is expected to be delayed until the summer.
Amorim’s exit follows a turbulent weekend in which he clashed with the media before and after Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United at Elland Road. In his pre-match press conference, the Portuguese coach refused to answer questions about transfers or whether he had been asked to adjust his tactical approach.
Since joining United last year, Amorim faced criticism over what some observers viewed as a rigid on-field approach. After the Leeds match, he further hinted at his uncertainty, stating that he joined United to work as a manager, not just a head coach, and implying that a separation could happen once his contract ended.
Reports in recent weeks suggested growing friction between Amorim and Jason Wilcox, with the former Sporting CP manager frustrated over unmet transfer promises—factors believed to have influenced the club’s decision.
Despite the managerial shake-up, Manchester United remain in contention for European qualification, currently sitting sixth in the Premier League, level on points with fifth-placed Chelsea and just three behind fourth-placed Liverpool.
