BREAKING NEWS: Paris Olympics athletes’ village officially opens

On Thursday, the Olympic and Paralympic athletes’ village in Paris formally opened and welcomed its first residents.

At its busiest, the community north of Paris will accommodate about 14,500 residents, nine thousand of them are athletes.

Australia and Brazil were the first countries on the team to arrive, eight days prior to the opening ceremony.

Augustin Tran Van Chau, the village’s deputy leader, told French media, “We are ready.”

The village’s organizers take pride in providing a climate where people may live comfortably without the need for air conditioning, as inside temperatures are maintained at least 6 degrees Celsius (42 Fahrenheit) below outdoor summertime temperatures.

Some delegations have ordered their own air-conditioning units anyway.

The village contains a host of innovations intended to make it a model of low-carbon construction.

After they have been used by Olympians and Paralympians between July 26 and September 8, the apartments will be converted into homes, with at least a third destined for public housing.
