Buhari appoints another Muslim Northerner, Farouk Yahaya, as new Chief of Army Staff

President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Major-General Farouk Yahaya as the new Chief of Army Staff.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by Onyema Nwachukwu, acting director of Defence Information, on Thursday in Abuja.

Yahaya’s appointment follows the abrupt end of the tenure of Ibrahim Attahiru, who died in an air crash involving a military aircraft in Kaduna.

Prior to his appointment, Yahaya was the General Officer Commanding 1 Division of the Nigerian Army and the incumbent theatre commander of the Counter Terrorism Counter Insurgency military outfit in the North East code-named Operation HADIN KAI.
