Calvin Chinedu Bassey, MON, the versatile left-back and centre-back for Premier League side Fulham and the Super Eagles, was born in Italy.

A product of Leicester City’s youth academy, Bassey never featured for the senior team before joining Scottish giants Rangers on a free transfer in 2020. Over two seasons, he made 65 appearances, helping the club win both the Scottish Premiership and the Scottish Cup. In July 2022, Bassey moved to Dutch side Ajax for a record transfer fee for Rangers, before signing with Fulham in July 2023.

Internationally, Bassey was eligible to represent Italy, Nigeria, or England but chose Nigeria in 2021. He made his Super Eagles debut in a 0–0 World Cup qualifier against Ghana on 25 March 2022. He scored his first international goal on 9 September 2025 in a 1–1 draw away to South Africa in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match.

Since his debut, Bassey has earned 43 caps for Nigeria. His performances in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2025, have been pivotal, showcasing his combative style, commitment, and professionalism.

Former Nigeria international and ex-Super Eagles assistant coach Sylvanus Okpala praised Bassey’s displays in Morocco. “Bassey is in a class of his own,” Okpala said. “He is a very good defender. His marking and ability to scuttle opponents’ attacking moves make him one of the best Super Eagles players.”

Okpala, who also coached Enugu Rangers, added: “He has been excellent and his performance outstanding. He also has a high football IQ and knows what to do under tight situations. Even under pressure, he knows when to go forward and when to fall back.”
