Carlos Alcaraz Defeats Jannik Sinner to Win US Open 2025, Reclaims World No. 1 Ranking

Carlos Alcaraz beat Jannik Sinner 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to win the 2025 US Open, securing his second title in New York and sixth Grand Slam overall. The Spaniard reclaimed the world No.1 ranking, ending Sinner’s 27-match streak at hard-court majors.

Carlos Alcaraz overcame Jannik Sinner in four sets on Sunday to win the US Open, with the final in New York also marked by mixed reactions from the crowd toward US President Donald Trump.

The 22-year-old Spaniard triumphed 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, securing his second US Open crown and sixth career Grand Slam title. The victory also allowed Alcaraz to avenge his defeat to Sinner in the Wimbledon final in July, the only major final he had previously lost.

With the win, Alcaraz will return to the top of the ATP rankings for the first time since September 2023, ending Sinner’s 27-match unbeaten streak at hard-court Grand Slam tournaments.

“I tried my best today. I couldn’t do more,” Sinner said afterward. The Italian had also lost to Alcaraz in a marathon French Open final earlier this year.

Sinner’s loss extends the longest period in the Open era without a successful men’s title defence at a Grand Slam. No player has defended the US Open men’s singles crown since Roger Federer’s five consecutive titles from 2004 to 2008.

Excitement for the third straight Grand Slam final between the world’s top two players was heightened by Trump’s presence at the stadium. The US President, who has recently attended several major sporting events including the NFL’s Super Bowl and the FIFA Club World Cup final, was greeted with a mixture of cheers and boos when he appeared before the playing of the national anthem. His reception grew more critical when he was shown again on the big screens later in the match.

Other high-profile spectators in attendance included rock legend Bruce Springsteen, fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger, actor Michael Douglas, and NBA star Stephen Curry.

Delayed Start Amid Tight Security

The final began 30 minutes later than scheduled due to tighter security measures linked to Trump’s visit. As a result, Arthur Ashe Stadium was only about three-quarters full when Alcaraz broke Sinner in the opening game.

Alcaraz quickly built momentum, taking the first set 6-2. However, Sinner responded in the second, breaking for a 3-1 lead before leveling the contest.

The Spaniard then regained control in the third set with early breaks and spectacular shot-making, racing to a 6-1 win. He carried that momentum into the fourth set, breaking Sinner again in the fifth game and holding firm to close out the match.

With the victory, Alcaraz joins a select group of players who have won multiple Grand Slam titles across all three surfaces — hard court, grass, and clay.
