Chelsea Rally at Newcastle as Comeback Draw Relieves Pressure on Maresca
Chelsea recovered from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Newcastle at St James’ Park, with goals from Reece James and Joao Pedro easing pressure on manager Enzo Maresca after a turbulent week.
Chelsea spared Enzo Maresca from further uncomfortable scrutiny after coming from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw against Newcastle on Saturday.
The Blues looked set for a damaging defeat at St James’ Park after Newcastle striker Nick Woltemade scored twice in the first half to put the hosts firmly in control.
However, Chelsea mounted a strong response after the break, with captain Reece James curling in a brilliant free-kick before Joao Pedro produced a stunning solo effort to restore parity.
Despite extending their winless run to four games in five, Chelsea remain fourth in the Premier League. The spirited comeback proved crucial for Maresca following a turbulent week that fuelled speculation about his future at the club.
On Friday, Maresca dismissed reports linking him with a potential move to Manchester City as “100 percent speculation.” The Italian has reportedly been listed as a possible replacement should Pep Guardiola leave City at the end of the season.
Those rumours emerged after Maresca appeared to criticise Chelsea’s hierarchy for a perceived lack of support. The 44-year-old, who is contracted until 2029, said after last weekend’s win over Everton that the previous 48 hours had been his toughest at the club, citing insufficient backing during a poor run of results.
Chelsea’s heavy rotation policy has also drawn criticism this season, with the team often appearing disjointed and defensively vulnerable.
Fast Start for Newcastle
After making 11 changes for Tuesday’s League Cup quarter-final win at third-tier Cardiff, Maresca recalled his senior players — but they struggled badly early on in foggy conditions on Tyneside.
Woltemade, eager to atone for an own goal in last weekend’s 1-0 loss to rivals Sunderland, struck after just four minutes. Jacob Murphy’s cross found Anthony Gordon at the far post, and after Robert Sanchez parried Gordon’s shot, Woltemade tapped into an empty net from close range.
Chelsea’s defensive frailties were exposed again in the 20th minute when Gordon was given too much space to deliver a precise cross, which Woltemade finished from close range following a VAR check that confirmed he was narrowly onside.
Newcastle could have extended their lead before half-time, but Woltemade volleyed wide after again combining with Gordon.
Chelsea Response
Maresca’s half-time talk sparked an immediate improvement, with James pulling one back in the 49th minute through a superb free-kick that flew past Newcastle goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.
Newcastle were controversially denied a penalty after Trevoh Chalobah barged into Gordon, and the Magpies’ injury-hit defence began to creak under Chelsea’s pressure. With Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn, Sven Botman and Tino Livramento sidelined, spaces opened up at the back.
Ramsdale produced a fine save to deny Pedro Neto, but Chelsea eventually drew level in the 66th minute. Joao Pedro smartly headed Sanchez’s long kick beyond Malick Thiaw before bursting into the area and finishing low with composure.
Maresca’s relief was evident as he celebrated enthusiastically on the touchline, the hard-earned draw easing the pressure after a challenging week for the Chelsea boss.
