EXCLUSIVE CHIBOK GIRLS ARE IN GWOZA SAYS FREED BOKO HARAM ABDUCTEE By Samuel Malik

Ten years have passed since the horrific kidnapping of 276 schoolgirls in Chibok, Borno State, and the US has reaffirmed its unflinching support for Nigeria in its fight against terrorism and protection of its people.

On April 14, 2024, the world commemorated ten years after the terrorist organisation Boko Haram kidnapped 276 girls from the Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, a town in Borno State, on the same day in 2014, during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The BringBackOurGirls advocacy group provided a status report in October 2022, stating that out of the 276 kidnapped girls, 57 managed to escape captivity by jumping from the vehicles they were being transported on. Of those, 107 were freed, and 16 were recovered and 96 remained missing.

Nevertheless, Yakubu Nkeki, the head of the Chibok Parents Association, informed our correspondent on Thursday that 82 of the girls remained in captivity while 138 had been rescued or freed.

In a press statement released on Sunday by Aisha Gambari, Head of Communication at the US Embassy in Abuja, the US stated that it supports the Nigerian government in its efforts to strengthen security, hold attackers accountable, and guarantee the welfare of its people.

“The United States remains committed to supporting Nigeria’s efforts to combat terrorism and protect its citizens.

“We continue to support the Nigerian government’s ongoing efforts to make Nigeria more secure, to hold perpetrators of attacks accountable, and to ensure the safety and well-being of all its citizens.

“The partnership between the United States and Nigeria is built on a foundation of shared values and common goals. We will continue to work together to promote peace, security, and stability in the region and to support initiatives that foster education, economic growth, and human rights,” the statement read in part.

The US added that it would never waver in its support of Nigeria in its fight against extremism and in building a better, safer future for its citizens.
