China has called on the United States to “immediately release” Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro following a reported US strike on Caracas and the capture of the Venezuelan leader.

In a statement on Sunday, China’s foreign ministry urged Washington to ensure the safety of President Maduro and his wife and to end actions aimed at overthrowing Venezuela’s government.

“China calls on the US to ensure the personal safety of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, release them at once, stop toppling the government of Venezuela,” the ministry said.
