China Fast-Tracks Zero-Tariff Plan for Africa After Meeting with ECOWAS
China has pledged to speed up its zero-tariff measures for African countries, according to Ambassador Yu Dunhai during a meeting with ECOWAS President Dr. Omar Touray in Abuja, strengthening China–ECOWAS cooperation.
China has disclosed plans to hasten the rollout of its zero-tariff policy for African countries, a move expected to bring fresh economic opportunities to West Africa.
The announcement came on Thursday in Abuja from the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Yu Dunhai, following his meeting with ECOWAS Commission President, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray.
Yu highlighted ECOWAS’ major contributions over the past five decades, crediting the bloc for advancing regional integration, promoting peace, and supporting democratic governance throughout West Africa. He described ECOWAS as “the most influential sub-regional organisation in Africa.”
He further noted that China’s relationship with the bloc is a strong example of South-South cooperation, pointing to the China-supported ECOWAS headquarters as a symbolic project of the partnership.
According to Yu, China’s 15th Five-Year Plan outlines a firm intention to expand development opportunities globally, and the accelerated zero-tariff initiative for African nations is part of that commitment.
During the visit, the ambassador also handed over a China-manufactured official vehicle to the ECOWAS President.
Responding, President Touray thanked China for its ongoing support, particularly in boosting ECOWAS’ institutional capacity. He said the organisation respects China’s development achievements and backs the four global initiatives put forward by the Chinese government.
Touray affirmed that ECOWAS is prepared to strengthen ties with China and “open a new chapter” in their cooperation.
