The Country President of United Nations – Positive Livelihood Award Centre (UN-POLAC) Amb. Prof. Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies has congratulated all ladies, women and girl-child on “The International Day of Women and Girls in Science” being celebrated today 11, February 2022. Today, I say congratulations and best wishes to us all ladies, women, and girl child on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

It has been stated that, “We need to encourage and support girls and women achieve their full potential as scientific researchers and innovators.’ — UN Secretary-General, António Guterres. The disparity in the education of male and female youths is a national issue particularly in developing countries like Nigeria. The dominant of male gender in schools in general and in the study of certain school subjects or career such as Sciences in particular is appalling. Schools and both teachers and parents should identify the talent and potentially of a girl-child and encourage them to be who they ought to be and fulfil their destiny.

To be candid, science and gender equality are both vital for the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Over the past 15 years, the global community has made a lot of effort in inspiring and engaging women and girls in science. Unfortunately, women and girls continued to be excluded from participating fully in science.

We could recall that, “according to a study conducted in 14 countries, the probability for female students of graduating with a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree and Doctor’s degree in science-related field are 18%, 8% and 2% respectively, while the percentages of male students are 37%, 18% and 6%.” This is unacceptable and needs to change.

Accordingly, as UN-POLAC International Peace Advocates, advancing the cause of UN millennium goals toward sustainable development, hereby admonish and encourage all the girl child and women today, as a day of remembrance not only to focus on only studies in Arts and Social sciences but Sciences as well. We must not relent on our efforts in any of the disciplines to achieve our potentials at all levels including Science (Scientific studies, researches and innovations) and Technology by the special grace of God Almighty.

In order to achieve full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls, and further achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/70/212 declaring 11, February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. This is a great reminder and special source of encouragement to us all. God bless you!
