Court Halts PDP Convention, Blocks INEC From Monitoring Over Lamido’s Exclusion
A Federal High Court in Abuja has halted the PDP’s planned Ibadan convention and restrained INEC from monitoring it, ruling that Sule Lamido was unlawfully denied the chance to obtain a nomination form for the chairmanship race.
The Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday stopped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from proceeding with its national convention scheduled for Saturday and Sunday in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Delivering judgment, Justice Peter Lifu also barred the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from supervising, monitoring, or recognising the outcome of any PDP convention conducted without including former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido as a contestant.
The court held that evidence showed Lamido was wrongfully denied access to obtain the nomination form to run for National Chairman, a move it ruled violated the PDP Constitution and its internal regulations.
Justice Lifu emphasised that the party has a duty to create fair opportunities for its members by ensuring structures that allow them to pursue their political ambitions.
As part of the consequential orders, the court directed that the planned convention be suspended to enable Lamido to secure the nomination form, mobilise supporters, and conduct his campaign.
