Court Refuses Bail for Singer Portable Over Assault, Theft Charges
An Ogun State High Court has denied bail to singer Portable after his arraignment on nine charges including assault, theft and resisting arrest, remanding him in custody till January 19.
An Ogun State High Court sitting in Ota, Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area, has refused to grant bail to controversial singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, following his arraignment on multiple criminal charges.
Portable is facing a nine-count charge bordering on assault, theft, causing bodily harm and resisting arrest.
The presiding judge declined the bail application, citing the absence of the police officer allegedly assaulted during the incident, and stressed that the officer’s presence was required before a ruling could be made.
As a result, the singer was remanded in custody, with the court adjourning the case to January 19 for a fresh hearing on the bail request.
Earlier, the spokesperson of the Ogun State Police Command, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the charges stemmed from a complaint reportedly filed by Portable’s estranged partner, Ashabi Simple.
Portable was arraigned on Monday after being arrested by operatives of the Ogun State Police Command over allegations linked to a New Year’s Day incident at his bar in the Iyana Ilogbo area of the state.
Prosecutors alleged that the singer attacked Ashabi, several police officers and other individuals at the scene. He was also accused of stealing a Mercedes-Benz E300 valued at ₦12 million, said to belong to one of the complainants, Ileyemi Damilola, and reportedly registered to a car dealership known as Wally Dex Auto.
During the proceedings, two siblings of Ashabi Simple testified as prosecution witnesses, giving accounts of the alleged assault, while Ashabi herself was absent from court.
Police further alleged that Portable obstructed and assaulted a female police inspector, Ogungbe Olayemi, while she was carrying out her official duties.
