Dangote Refinery Receives First Batch of 4,000 CNG Trucks for Nationwide Fuel Distribution
The project is expected to create over 15,000 direct jobs across the logistics chain, including roles for drivers, station managers, and attendants at newly established CNG stations. It is also intended to revive dormant filling stations, reduce cross-border fuel smuggling, and support a greener and more efficient fuel distribution system nationwide.
Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has begun taking delivery of 4,000 compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered trucks as part of its ambitious fuel distribution programme, which is officially set to launch on August 15. The initiative aims to revolutionize Nigeria’s downstream petroleum logistics by cutting distribution costs, improving efficiency, and enhancing nationwide fuel availability.
According to a statement released by the company on Sunday, the CNG trucks — being imported through Apapa Port — represent a ₦720 billion capital investment. The first batch has already arrived at the refinery site in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, and was received by Devakumar Edwin, Vice-President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries, alongside refinery staff and customers.
“The fleet of fuel tankers, being imported through Apapa Port, represents a significant capital investment estimated at ₦720 billion. This expenditure underscores the company’s commitment to pioneering innovative solutions as the world’s largest single-train refinery continues to expand its operational capabilities,” the company said.
Anthony Chiejina, Group Chief of Branding and Communication, called the development a “groundbreaking” move for Nigeria’s petroleum distribution sector.
“Given the complexities inherent in global supply chains, the delivery of these specialised CNG-powered tankers is indeed commendable. This approach ensures that we maintain operational efficiency while scaling up the fleet,” he stated.
He further revealed that at least 60 shiploads of trucks are expected to arrive in Nigeria over the next six weeks.
“Our unwavering commitment to this programme is reflected in our ongoing collaboration with key regulatory bodies and stakeholders to facilitate seamless deployment. We believe this initiative will significantly lower distribution costs and improve fuel availability for our customers nationwide,” Chiejina added.
The refinery’s new distribution model is designed to cut fuel transportation costs, reduce bottlenecks, and boost energy security across the country.
Back in June, Dangote Refinery had announced plans to deploy these 4,000 CNG-powered trucks to distribute petroleum products nationwide — an initiative projected to save Nigerians over ₦1.7 trillion annually in fuel distribution expenses.
The company also emphasized that the programme is expected to benefit over 42 million Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) by reducing energy costs and improving business profitability.
“This strategic programme is part of Dangote’s broader commitment to eliminating logistics bottlenecks, enhancing energy efficiency, promoting environmental sustainability, and supporting Nigeria’s economic development,” the company stated.
