David Alaba, Austria captain misses out on Euro 2024

The most notable absence from coach Ralf Rangnick’s roster for Euro 2024 was Austria’s captain David Alaba.

The center defender for Real Madrid sustained an ACL left knee injury in December, but he was unable to fully heal in time.

“It’s obviously a great pity he won’t be able to participate as a player. I’ve been chatting to him over these past few weeks and he says it’s his great wish to be around with us,” said Rangnick.

By June 7, Rangnick has to cut his initial 29-player roster to 26 players.

Austria’s Euro Group D campaign begins on June 17 in Dusseldorf against France. Three days later, on June 19, they take on Poland in Berlin, and on June 25 they play the Netherlands.
