Deadly Clashes Erupt Between Hamas Forces and Doghmush Clan in Gaza After Ceasefire
Multiple deaths were reported in Gaza City after fierce clashes between Hamas security forces and the Doghmush clan, days after the Israel–Hamas ceasefire. Hamas accused the clan of collaborating with Israel, while the family denied the claim.
Violent clashes between Hamas security forces and members of the Doghmush clan in Gaza City left several people dead and others injured over the weekend, multiple sources confirmed on Monday.
The fighting, which erupted just days after the Israel–Hamas ceasefire took effect, broke out in the Sabra neighbourhood on Sunday evening, according to eyewitnesses who spoke to AFP under condition of anonymity due to safety concerns.
“About 200 members of the (Hamas) security forces were present and fought until they completely subdued the clan members,” one resident said. “There were dead and wounded among the Doghmush family, but also martyrs and injured among the security forces.”
Another resident described how calm only returned to the neighbourhood around 9:30 p.m. (1830 GMT) after hours of heavy gunfire.
A source from Gaza’s Hamas-run Interior Ministry confirmed that there were fatalities on both sides, alleging that the Doghmush clan was linked to Israeli intelligence and responsible for several killings. The source added that about 60 clan members had been arrested in the aftermath of the clashes.
The Doghmush family, however, denied any ties to Israel, though it admitted that “some members committed transgressions” without elaborating. The clan accused Hamas forces of targeting its members indiscriminately.
“In recent days, it was enough to belong to the Doghmush family to be shot in the legs, killed, arrested, or have your house burned down,” wrote Abu al-Hassan Doghmush, a prominent clan member, on Facebook.
The Doghmush family has a long history of tension with Hamas, dating back to the group’s takeover of the Gaza Strip in 2007, which has periodically led to violent confrontations.
Amid the unrest, Gaza’s Interior Ministry on Sunday announced a “general amnesty period” for members of so-called “criminal gangs” who had not committed murder during the recent conflict.
Since the ceasefire came into force on Friday, Hamas security forces have been visibly deployed across urban areas, markets, and major roads throughout Gaza, as the group moves to reassert control following weeks of war.
