Nigerian music star Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P, says poverty remains his greatest fear despite his success in the entertainment industry.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Nancy Isime Show, the singer revealed that while he is unbothered by the idea of death, the thought of becoming poor again terrifies him.

He recalled a difficult moment from his childhood when the single-room boys’ quarters his family rented was demolished after the landlord sold the property.

Sharing the experience, Okoye said:
“I am not afraid of death. The only thing I am afraid of in this life is poverty, of being broke. I have tasted it before. I have been in our house with my parents and siblings and a bulldozer came and demolished it.

“We were living in a boys’ quarter, me, my mum, my dad, all of us — six boys and two girls living in a one-bedroom apartment. They had to divide the room with a curtain. The landlord had sold the compound, and while we were still pleading for time to relocate, a bulldozer came and started demolishing the building.”

The singer said the memory remains one of the reasons he is determined never to return to a life of hardship.
