Delta Lagos-Atlanta Flight Diverts to Accra After Oven Fire Incident
A Delta Air Lines flight from Lagos to Atlanta was diverted to Accra after a fire broke out in the aircraft’s oven. NCAA confirmed passengers were rebooked, with Delta arranging alternative flights through New York, Air France, British Airways, KLM, and Lufthansa.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has confirmed that a Delta Air Lines flight from Lagos to Atlanta was forced to divert to Accra, Ghana, following a fire incident onboard.
According to NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mr. Michael Achimugu, the incident occurred on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, when a fire broke out in the aircraft’s oven.
“By the time the issue was resolved, the flight crew had exceeded their rest time limits, making it impossible to continue,” Achimugu explained in a statement posted on X.
The affected flight, DL055, was diverted to Accra where safety measures were taken. Achimugu confirmed that some passengers were rebooked on Delta’s Accra–New York service later that evening, with additional rebookings carried out the following night. The diverted flight eventually departed from Accra on September 25 at about 12:00hrs.
Addressing disruptions to Delta’s Atlanta–Lagos route, Achimugu said: “Although passengers were duly informed about the cancellation, the airline accommodated those who arrived at the airport by providing transportation to hotels as reported in the flight disruption of this morning. Twenty-three passengers had been rebooked on Air France, while others would be airlifted on British Airways, KLM, and Lufthansa Airlines.”
He added that remaining passengers are scheduled to travel on Delta’s next scheduled Lagos flight on September 26 at 11:40hrs. He further clarified that “Air France flight has not been cancelled as speculated but would operate at 01:30hrs.”
